Podcast Thoughts: My Dad Wrote a Porno

My Dad Wrote a Porno is a comedy podcast based around Jamie Morton’s father, referred to as Rocky Flintstone and the ‘erotic’ novels he’s written entitled the Belinda Blinked series, yeah, it’s quite weird. They tell the story of up-and-coming businesswoman Belinda Blumenthal and her progression through the pots and pans industry by romancing (I’m using that term very loosely) her way to the top. If this concept seems bizarre that’s because it is but, incredibly, it works.

Each episode Jamie reads from his father’s novel whilst his friends Alice and James comment on the happenings in the story and discuss what this could mean for the FLU (Flintstone Literary Universe). Remarkably, it is one of the funniest things you’ll ever hear. Between Rocky’s writing and the commentary on it by the podcast team there is never a moment devoid of some hilarity.

The story of Belinda is pretty much totally indescribable out of context but involves a maze, Amsterdam and a whole lot of characters including Bella(Donna), Peter Rouse and Jim Sterling, who, frankly, could fill book upon book of his own. Rocky’s writings are filled with twists and turns and a range of one-appearance characters as well as having a total lack of understanding of any sort of sexual biology and some completely unfathomable decision-making by pretty much every character. This genius combination means that soon enough you begin to fall in love with the books as much as the hilarity of the podcast. The listener is never quite sure if Rocky is completely self-aware and ironic or as clueless as every sign has indicated but whichever one it is he writes in a charmingly, brilliantly, terribly unique way.

Flintstone manages to be both gifted as a storyteller and prolific with a second series of the podcast just finished for the second book in the franchise and a third on its way to tie in with the next novel in the series.

As well as the main podcast on a Monday there is also a foonotes edition released on Wednesdays where another area of the FLU is explored, often with celebrity guests that have included Elijah Wood, Michael Sheen and Daisy Ridley.

I pretty much don’t know what else I can say about My Dad Wrote a Porno but basically it’s hilarious, like really hilarious, like trying to hide that you’re laughing out loud on a bus hilarious. It’s also very surreal but in a totally fitting way that just adds to the hilarity of the whole thing. You should have a listen, it’s really good.
